Historical Maps and Atlases

The University Library houses a large map collection of about 60.000 printed maps from all over the world. They include topographic and thematic maps, single maps and map series, wall-maps and globes. Characteristics are special old maps from the mr H.Bos-collection, a large collection of international geological maps and an extended collection of applied cartography  and of public map series of The Netherlands from the 19th century onward.

Digital maps

The collection of old maps, largely published before 1900, has been scanned and mad available through our Image Database. The Image Database provides extensive search options and allows for high resolution downloads. Feel free to visit the Image Database.

Georeferenced maps

In the period from October 2020 until March 2021 all old maps have been georeferenced by the crowd. Through the webviewer below you can already start looking for old maps. Please note that the review process is still ongoing, so errors may be encountered.

Map Series Database

In the Map Series Database you can find an overview of all published map sheets of important Dutch map series and an inventory of map sheets in the UL-collection.
